During her universities days, she chose volleyball over basketball and played for the team Virginia Tech and led her team to a win. Talking about her married life, she tied the knot with Dell Curry who is a former NBA player and currently works as a commentator. While Sonya was playing for Virginia Tech, her coach invited Dell to one of her matches. At the end of the match, Dell asked her to go out. After dating a few years they married and in the same year, they welcomed their first child Stephen Curry.
