The actor was born on 19 July 1937 as Robert Anson Jordan Jr, under the zodiac sign, Cancer. He was born as the son of his parents: Robert Anson Jordan Sr. and Constance in New York City, the United States of America. Further, his parents divorced when he was five years old. After that, his mother married the president of the New York City Council, Newbold Morris. No information on his father’s next marriage.

It is unclear whether he had siblings or not. Regarding his education, he graduated from the Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Connecticut. He then went on to join Harvard University and graduated in 1958. During that time, he also started his acting career and began to appear in the acting projects with the stage name Richard. He had fathered two children from his relationship with two different women. He first married actress Kathleen Widdoes from 1964 to 1972. From this marriage, he had welcomed a daughter Nina Jordan.
