Growing up, Jan wanted to get into farming like the rest of his family. However, at the age of 12, he got a chance to help a vet deliver a litter of piglets and that turned out to be a life-changing moment for him. Dr. Pol then wanted to pursue a veterinarian’s life. Jan studied veterinary medicine at Utrecht University and later graduated with a degree in Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM).
He has had an amazing career and accomplished a lot as a veterinarian. He currently owns ‘Pol Veterinary Services’ and has a team of specialists helping him. These two met in 1961 when Jan was in a foreign exchange program at Mayville High School. He spent a high school year in Michigan to be closer to his sister who had moved to Canada. In Michigan, he was hosted by a family and Diane was the daughter in that family.
When Pol returned to the Netherlands, he still tried to be in touch with Diane through letters. In one of his letters, Pol invited Diane to visit him and this set a strong foundation for their relationship.
Later in 1967, Pol got married to Diane in a small wedding ceremony. After saying their wedding vows, they got back to the Netherlands as Dr. Pol still had to complete his education; Pol graduated in 1970.

Currently, they both work together for Jan’s vet service. They have been married for over 50 years now but do not have kids of their own.
