Henao was born in 1961 in Colombia which makes her nationality a Colombian. Maria was born to parents Carlos Henao Vallejo and his wife Leonor Zuleta. Similarly, she also has an older brother who worked with Pablo during his initial days of drug dealing. Maria’s brother was the one to introduce her to Pablo. She met Pablo for the very first time while she was only 13 years old.

Due to Pablo’s low social status, Maria’s family was against the marriage of the two. So, against the will of her family, she eloped with Escobar and married in the year 1976. Later in the year 1977, she gave birth to their first child Juan Pablo Escobar on 24 February. Similarly, their second child, a daughter Manuela Escobar, was born in the year 1984. Despite his marriage to Maria, Pablo had many affairs and mistresses all through the marriage. Maria knew of all the affairs and her husband’s infidelities but still chose to stay with him. She had to constantly be on the run and even change her and their children’s name to be safe. In the year 2000, she was under arrest and charged with several criminal charges. However, all of those charges couldn’t be proved against her so she was released.
